The Haller Foundation has built on the work of Dr Rene Haller, a pioneering naturalist who formulated a way to rejuvenate barren farmland in Kenya and return it to sustainable agriculture. By observing ecosystems closely, Dr Haller noticed that the symbiotic relationship between the casuarina tree and the ‘red legged’ millipede was enough to reintroduce fertile soil into the area. Building on this, the Foundation now encourages local farmers to create systems that work in synthesis with their surroundings. For example, children are encouraged to plant seeds in old tyres, which simultaneously increases crop yields and reduces malaria. Many similar ideas abound in this sympathetic film, which inspires hope for a developing world that is both self-sufficient and community based. Click here to watch on Joost!
