Before War Horse was adapted for stage, puppetry and the horrors of the First World War might not have seemed like natural partners. Les Enfants Terribles’ production may not yet have achieved the same level of fame as the Michael Morpurgo work, but it deserves its own acclaim. Inspired by a true story, The Trench tells of Herbert, a miner determined to do his bit for his country who loses far more in the trenches than he could have ever imagined. Rendered desperate by horror and grief, he strikes a bargain and accepts a challenge. This multi-dimensional piece of theatre employs puppetry, poetic language, physical theatre, and haunting live music to spectacular and inventive effect.
