Albert Camus‘ 1942 novel, L’Étranger, is a classic of existential literature. In this solo performance, award-winning actor Guilherme Leme portrays titular character Meursault. Meursault is a man who reacts to life and allows himself to be swept along by his environment. The casual choices he makes lead to both his destruction and his redemption. As the novel is told from Meursault’s point of view, the adaptation is a fairly straightforward retelling of key points of the novel. Its success therefore lies in the performance. Leme is mesmerising as Meursault, his story searing in its honesty. The stark lighting and minimalist set perfectly complement the emotional intensity of the material, and one feels Camus would approve.
