The author’s name in the title indicates what will be the main draw for many audience members. Mel Giedroyc serves up a generous helping of family drama as sisters Victoria (devoted daughter), Madeleine (catty LA career woman) and Charlotte (doting super-mum and wife) gather in their dying mother’s kitchen. As Victoria’s sponge is assembled, long-buried family tensions bubble to the surface and hidden truths emerge. What could have been a deeply moving piece of theatre is played mostly for laughs, with the characters bordering on cartoonish and too little time to explore the deeper emotional content. This lack of subtlety feels like a trick has been missed, but Slice remains an enjoyable if undemanding piece of theatre.
