Children’s Show / 60 min / £9 (£8)/ U (4+)
Bits of scrap become makeshift puppets in Theatre La Pushkin’s impressionistic performance of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. Rags, string, plastic and more are employed with varying degrees of success. There are some magical moments, as when a bit of fluff representing the cat is rocketed across the stage at high speed, but the narrative thread at times is lost within the chaos. The stark lighting means finer details can be difficult to detect, and the set occasionally obscures the action for some audience members. The first half of the show works well despite these challenges but an additional movement sequence has been added to Prokofiev’s 25-minute composition. This latter portion unfortunately feels like an afterthought and detracts from an otherwise enjoyable show.
